Is Parasailing Safe? (The Answer: Yes!)
In the United States, between 3 and 5 million people go parasailing annually. Is parasailing safe? From 1982 to 2012 there were 150 million riders and only 1,700 accidents. That’s a 0.001% of anything happening, and the odds get better with better equipment and using a professional service provider.
If you’re thinking of parasailing this summer, it’s good to know that parasailing is a safe sport. But, like any sport, it comes with risks.

Is Parasailing Safe?
Parasailing is a low-risk activity. Use an experienced operator who maintains and inspects his equipment on a regular basis.
Parasailing is a sporting and recreational activity where you’re towed behind a boat while held aloft by a parachute-like sail. The sail is attached to the boat by a tow rope.
Once lofted into the air, you can reach altitudes of up to 1,000 feet! However, according to Federal Aviation Administration guidelines, your flight will not be higher than 500 vertical feet above the ground.
Before you go, make sure the parasail operator is reputable. Take a look at a few things to ensure your parasail safety.
Look at the Ropes
The ropes are your lifeline. Of the few accidents that happen, they usually involve the tow ropes.
There are no laws regarding how often parasail operators must change out their ropes. A reputable operator changes out the lines on a regular basis.
Take a look at the ropes yourself!
If the towline has knots in it, it’s more likely to fail. A good operator won’t use a towline full of knots.
If the ropes look dirty, faded, and worn, that’s a sign that the equipment isn’t in good condition.
Understanding Weather Conditions
When it comes to parasailing safety, the weather is important. Stormy conditions or high winds are a no-go!
If you’re parasailing in Florida, you won’t have to worry about making the call. In Florida, it’s against the law for parasail operators to take passengers out in high winds or stormy weather.
In other states and countries, there are no laws, so you’ll need to make the call yourself.
A good rule of thumb is to look at the beach umbrellas. If it’s too windy to set one up, then it’s not a good time to go parasailing.
You shouldn’t be parasailing if the winds are a sustained 20 mph or higher.
